Physicians (MD, DO)

CME credit through AAFP

AAEME's continuing medical education accreditation is being established through the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), one of the most widely accepted CME accreditors in the United States. AAFP-accredited CME credit is recognized across specialty boards, hospital privileging, and state medical board renewal requirements nationwide.

The AAFP pathway is sponsored by Dr. Robert "Neal" Mills, MD, MBA, FAAFP, AAEME's AAFP Sponsoring Physician, whose role ensures curriculum alignment with AAFP Prescribed Credit criteria.

How to Receive Credit for an AAEME Program

Once accreditation is in place, the credit process for AAEME courses is straightforward. Credit is issued upon successful completion of the course and, where applicable, a passing score on the associated certification exam. It is documented on the certificate of completion.

  1. 01
    Enroll in the course

CME and CEU credit eligibility is listed on each course's enrollment page. Paid courses include credit eligibility in the enrollment fee.

  2. 02
    Complete the course requirements

Coursework is completed online and self-paced. Some programs include a certification examination. Credit is contingent on successful completion of all program requirements.

  3. 03
    Receive your certificate

Certificates are issued upon completion and document the credit hours earned, the accrediting body, and the AAEME program completed. Certificates serve as the official record for licensure renewal, hospital credentialing, and specialty board reporting.

  4. 04
Submit credit to your licensing body

Submission of CME or CEU credit to your state board, specialty board, or licensing authority follows that body's standard process. AAEME certificates contain the documentation required for self-reporting.

Credit for Nurses, PTs, OTs, and PA-Cs

AAEME's primary audience is physicians, but the curriculum is open to and used by other licensed healthcare professionals. Credit pathways for non-physician healthcare providers vary by profession and by state. AAEME is exploring accreditation options for the most commonly enrolled professional categories.

Registered Nurses

National nursing CEU accreditation is being explored for AAEME courses, which would satisfy continuing education requirements for nurses across most state nursing boards.

Exploring
Physical & Occupational Therapists

Most state PT and OT licensing boards accept continuing education accredited through other recognized bodies. AAEME certificates document the accrediting body and credit hours, which therapists can submit through their state board's standard self-reporting process.

Exploring
Physician Assistants (PA-C)

PA-Cs may use AAEME-issued continuing education credit toward NCCPA certification maintenance requirements, depending on the credit category designation. Specific eligibility is confirmed on each course's enrollment page.

Exploring
Other licensed healthcare professionals

Other professionals enrolled in AAEME programs receive a certificate of completion documenting the program, the credit hours, and the accrediting body. Credit acceptance is subject to the requirements of each profession's licensing authority.

Case by case

CME/CEU and Free Foundations Courses

CME and CEU credit is offered on AAEME's paid certification courses and exams only. The free IR Foundations library is open educational content with no credit pathway attached. This keeps the Foundations library genuinely free and removes the per-learner accreditation fees that would otherwise need to be passed on.

Paid courses and exams

CME and CEU credit eligibility is included in the enrollment fee. No separate processing fee.

Free IR Foundations courses

The free Foundations library is open to any licensed provider with a free AAEME account. CME/CEU credit is not offered on these courses. If you need formal continuing education credit, see our certification courses.

Common Questions About AAEME Credit

Direct answers to the questions physicians and other healthcare professionals most often ask about CME and CEU credit for AAEME programs. Specific credit hour totals and accrediting body designations are always confirmed on each course's enrollment page.

Are AAEME courses currently accredited for CME credit?

AAEME's CME accreditation through the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is in process. Applications have been submitted and are pending review. Until accreditation is approved, AAEME courses are delivered with certificates of completion documenting the program and hours, but not as accredited CME credit. Once approved, eligible courses will issue accredited credit going forward, and updated credit information will be reflected on each course's enrollment page.

Why AAFP and not a different CME accreditor?

The American Academy of Family Physicians is one of the most widely accepted CME accreditors in the United States. AAFP-accredited credit is recognized across specialty boards, state medical board renewal requirements, and hospital privileging processes. For physicians, the practical question is whether their licensing authority and specialty board will accept the credit; AAFP accreditation answers that across the broadest possible range of contexts.

Will the CME credit count toward my specialty board requirements?

AAFP-accredited CME credit is generally accepted by specialty boards across medicine, including the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member boards. Specific category designation and acceptance depend on each board's current rules. Physicians should confirm acceptance with their specialty board's continuing certification requirements before relying on any single source for compliance.

How are chiropractors covered for CEU credit?

Chiropractic continuing education credit for AAEME courses is being established through state and national chiropractic accreditation pathways. The objective is credit that satisfies licensure renewal requirements across the broadest range of state chiropractic boards. Specific accrediting body designations and credit hour totals will be confirmed on each course's enrollment page as accreditation is approved.

I'm a nurse, PT, OT, or PA-C; can I take AAEME courses?

Yes. AAEME courses are open to all licensed healthcare professionals regardless of profession. Credit pathways for non-physician professionals vary by profession and by state, and AAEME is exploring formal accreditation options for the most commonly enrolled categories. Most state PT, OT, and PA-C licensing boards accept continuing education accredited through other recognized bodies via self-reporting, using the certificate of completion AAEME issues.

Can I get CME or CEU credit for the free Foundations courses?

No. CME and CEU credit are not offered on the free IR Foundations library. The Foundations library is intentionally open educational content. If you need formal continuing education credit, AAEME's paid certification courses include credit eligibility in the enrollment fee.

Are paid courses and exams credit-eligible automatically?

Yes. CME and CEU credit eligibility is included in the enrollment fee for all paid AAEME courses and exams. There is no separate processing fee for credit on paid programs. Credit hour totals and accrediting body designations are listed on each course's enrollment page.

How do I submit my AAEME credit to my licensing board?

Each licensing board has its own self-reporting process for continuing education credit. AAEME issues a certificate of completion documenting the program completed, the credit hours earned, and the accrediting body. The certificate contains the documentation most boards require. Submission methods, deadlines, and any additional requirements are determined by each licensing authority.
